During your JAMB registration, you will come across terms like Profile Code and Registration Number.
Many people wonder whether these two are the same or if they serve the same or different purposes.
Certainly, both are important and as a candidate, you should know them, when you need each and what they do.
If you are confused about these terms and want to know what they are and whether they are the same, we will be glad to help you understand them better.
We will explain:
- What a Profile Code is.
- What a Registration Number is.
- The key differences between them.
- Why each one is important.
- How to retrieve them if you lose them.
What is a profile code?
The profile code is a special 10-digit number that you will receive when you send your NIN (National Identification Number) to 55019 or 66019.
It is the first and most important step in your JAMB registration. Without this code, you cannot buy the JAMB ePIN or complete your registration.
The profile code helps JAMB identify each candidate and keep their information organized.
Every student must have this code before they can move forward with the registration process.
You have it, just like every other candidate.
How to generate a Profile Code
Unlike the registration number, you need your NIN to get your profile code.
To get a profile code:
- Send NIN [Your NIN] via SMS to 55019 or 66019.
- See an example of a profile code below:
NIN 12345678901 — Profile code.
- You will receive a 10-digit Profile Code.
Note: If you encounter any issues or errors when processing your profile code, then, it could be due to issues with your NIN or phone number.
What is a Registration Number?
The Registration Number is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to JAMB candidates after completing the full registration process at a JAMB CBT (Computer-Based Test) centre.
It is different from the profile code and is used to identify students throughout the JAMB examination and admission process.
This number appears on the JAMB printout and you need it to check results, print admission letters, and access other JAMB services.
Without the registration number, you won’t be able to track your admission status.
You need your registration number to:
- Access your JAMB CAPS (Central Admissions Processing System)
- Check your UTME results
- Apply for Post-UTME at universities
- Verify your Admission status.
- And, perform many other JAMB-related services.
Format of JAMB Registration Number
- The format usually looks like this: 12345678AB
- It is longer and more complex than the profile code.

Why each one is important
-
Profile Code:
-
-
You need this code to complete your JAMB registration.
-
No profile code means you cannot buy your ePIN and therefore, can’t register for JAMB.
-
-
-
Registration Number:
-
-
It is more important after registration – you need it for all post-registration activities.
-
It allows you to check results, admission status, and access JAMB CAPS.
-
-
As you can see, the two numbers are important, they mean different things and play different roles.

They are different and serve different important purposes.
In addition, while you get the Profile Code at the beginning of your JAMB registration, your registration number comes after you finish the registration process.
Plus, unlike the profile code, you need the Registration Number for post-registration activities like checking results and accessing JAMB CAPS.
Your job as a candidate is to keep the two numbers safe, you need them after all.
