About the Grant
Established in honour of Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer, the grant reflects her passion for Africa, science, and environmental sustainability.
Jennifer’s journey in Africa began in the 1990s when she moved to Zimbabwe and later settled in South Africa. Over time, she shifted her philanthropic focus towards environmental conservation, recognizing its vital role in Africa’s future.
The JWO Research Grant aims to continue her legacy by funding cutting-edge research that contributes to a sustainable future for the continent.

- Grant Amount: $150,000
- Duration: Up to three years
Note: The grant does not support previously funded research projects.
Who can apply?
To be eligible for the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant, applicants must be:
- Early-Career Scientist: The lead researcher should have completed their PhD and have no more than seven years of post-PhD research or work experience (excluding time taken for family responsibilities).
- Strong Institutional Affiliation: The applicant must be affiliated with a recognized African institution, such as:

- Africa-Focused Research: The proposed project must focus on Africa and demonstrate a strong connection to biodiversity and conservation.
Key judging criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on the following factors:
- Scientific Excellence & Innovation – The research must push the boundaries of scientific knowledge with rigorous methodologies and innovative approaches.
- Solving African Challenges – The project should tackle real-world environmental problems affecting multiple regions in Africa and offer scalable solutions.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration – Preference is given to projects that partner with multiple researchers or institutions, especially intra-African collaborations, to maximize impact.
- Human Capital Development – The project should contribute to the mentorship, training, and career growth of upcoming researchers.
- Clear Impact & Knowledge Sharing – The research should have a real-world impact, with a well-defined strategy for sharing results both within and beyond the scientific community.
- Ethical Standards – The research must adhere to ethical and safety guidelines and avoid unacceptable risks.
