Who can apply?

To be eligible for the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant, applicants must be:

  • Early-Career Scientist: The lead researcher should have completed their PhD and have no more than seven years of post-PhD research or work experience (excluding time taken for family responsibilities).
  • Strong Institutional Affiliation: The applicant must be affiliated with a recognized African institution, such as:
        • Universities and academic institutions
        • Research organizations
        • Government agencies
        • NGOs or for-profit organizations with a strong research component
  • Africa-Focused Research: The proposed project must focus on Africa and demonstrate a strong connection to biodiversity and conservation.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration – Preference is given to projects that partner with multiple researchers or institutions, especially intra-African collaborations, to maximize impact.
  • Human Capital Development – The project should contribute to the mentorship, training, and career growth of upcoming researchers.
  • Clear Impact & Knowledge Sharing – The research should have a real-world impact, with a well-defined strategy for sharing results both within and beyond the scientific community.
  • Ethical Standards – The research must adhere to ethical and safety guidelines and avoid unacceptable risks.
